The La Defense area is where, according to the literature, the corporate look and feel can be applied to the buildings and surroundings without impinging on the historical architecture of Paris. I like the idea that they gave a place for the modern look without denigrating the historical feel of Paris. The Grande Arche was magnificent, and the skill that went into constructing it is amazing. Constructing the two sides wouldn't have been deifficult, but the top of the "arch" would've been a bear to connect in the middle. For informational purposes, the dedication plaque said it was build from 1983 to 1986.
The artworks that were scattered around the plaza were mostly modern sculptures, which I'm not much into, but were impressive in size if nothing else! LOL
And of course, the statue of La Defense was dedicated to the people in defense of the city during the wars.
All in all, the trip to La Defense and back and all the walking around the plaza was about 4 hours long. There were a lot of shops in the large glass building shown above. I did a little window shopping, but it was almost entirely either bath shops or ladies' apparel. Neither one was very appealing to me. [grin]
